Associations, producers and retailers together for a major awareness-raising campaign. With the aid of an app.

Preventing and reducing food wastage to decrease the production of waste and reuse food excess: this is the goal of Life-Food Waste Stand Up, a new project funded by the European Union within the Life program. This initiative is coordinated by Federalimentare with the participation of the Banco Alimentare Onlus Foundation, Federdistribuzione and Unione Nazionale Consumatori.

The project aim is a major awareness-raising campaign based on three strategic points: food enterprises, retailers, and consumers. The cooperation of the main actors of the food chain will allow to coordinate of actions and tools to reduce food wastage and promote education about food excess recovery.

Federalimentare president Luigi Scordamaglia, head of the project, declared: “The fight against food wastage is an absolute priority for the whole Italian food chain. For the first time we face this issue with an extraordinary initiative that can count on the participation of all stakeholders and takes up the legacy left by Milan Expo. Our initiative complies with the Pinpas and with the law for the fight against food waste and for the distribution of food excess to people in need, which is currently being discussed by the Senate. The text has already been approved by the Chamber of Deputies and we wish it will be definitively passed soon.”

In the meanwhile, numerous initiatives are being organized to fight food wastage on a local scale. An example is the app LastMinuteSottoCasa, an initiative born in Turin which is now spreading in Lombardy. The app allows retailers to announce the sale of food close to its expiration date at a strongly reduced price: citizens benefit from high discounts on products that are actually still fresh, retailers increase their profits, and above all the waste of food is considerably reduced. To date the app has got 50 thousand users and about one thousand participating shops. LastMinuteSottoCasa is an idea by Francesco Ardito and Massimo Ivul and was launched a year ago with the aid of the I3P Incubator of the Politecnico of Turin.
