From August 27th it will be possible to request technological innovation funds. Preliminary activities (sorting and storage) are not included.
Soon it will be possible to apply for incentives to promote the development of new technologies for the treatment and recycling of WEEE (Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment). From August 27th there will be the chance to apply for funding at the Italian Ministry for the Environment. The access to funding can be granted to public and private subjects, individuals or associations working in the WEEE treatment chain and universities and research institutes.
A public notice defines the criteria, modes and procedures for the access to economic contributions and resources allocated every year by the general directorate for waste and pollution of the Ministry for the Environment. The funding is part of the Ministry’s ordinary budgetary allocations and is assigned with an annual public notice. The selection procedure is taken care of by the general directorate for waste and pollution of the Ministry for the Environment.
All measures to promote the development of new technologies in the WEEE recycling sector are regulated by the Ministry for the Environment’s 25/07/2016 decree published on the Official Gazette on August 12th 2016. The goal of this incentive program is to maximize the amount of recyclable material coming from WEEE treatment plants and to optimize the energy consumption of recycling and recovery processes, or reduce the number of phases. The interventions covered by the funding may also concern the reduction of health and safety risks of the workers. The interventions are required to effectively increase the technological level of the plants in comparison with the state-of-the-art practices of the sector. Technological innovations concerning the activities that precede the actual recycling (such as sorting and storage) are not covered by the funding. Most importantly, the plants applying for funding must comply with the dispositions of Art. 18 of the Italian Legislative Decree 49/2014.
